Do you know one of the first things they teach web designers and digital marketers? The more choices you give to your buyer, the lesser are the odds of that person actually settling on something. That’s why there’s usually but one button on a decent landing page and that’s why there are separate pages for separate products instead of a convenient list. I guess this thing doesn’t only work in web development. How do I know it? Because I live in London it is simpler to find a needle in a hay stag located in a barn that’s bursting with flames while blindfolded than it is to pick where to go on a Friday night. Especially in a group where everyone has their own preferences.
There are simply too many choices and all of them are just too good to miss out on.
I never thought I’d say this but too much entertainment is a bad thing. And it’s probably the reason why everyone just has their favorite pub that they go to over and over and over without even attempting to discover something new.
This only gets worse for those of us who are new to the capital and haven’t had the chance to explore all of its potential yet but still root for the safest option of familiarity. Come on, people – you need to explore more!
That being said, now is as good a time as any to fix this issue. I’ll introduce you to only 7 of the hundreds of mind-blowing things you can do in the Smoke in hopes that a shorter list will make your choice easier.
What, oh what shall I do tonight?
Let’s make the long story short and cut straight to our list. I’d be more than happy if you’d go for at least one of the things mentioned below, but consider giving at least a couple of them a shot during the course of one night out. You’ll never forget it!
Go Happy Hour hunting! You don’t need me to tell you that a couple of drinks in London can punch a significant hole in your bank account. Why not spend less on the same drinks? There are literally dozens of places that offer discounts and great deals on particular hours of the day (or night). Do a little bit of research online, choose a few places that have Happy Hours at different times, and pay them a visit. Not only will you save a lot of money, but you’ll also discover a wide variety of new venues.
Visit the Natural History Museum. What? That doesn’t sound like one hell of a party. Why? Because of “science”? Hell no. Where else will you experience the thrill of the earth falling from beneath your feet than in an earthquake simulator? Where else will you be able to shoot a selfie with a full-blown dinosaur skeleton? And I haven’t even touched the giant trees or glowing crystals that are displayed inside a museum. The place is definitely worth your time!
Enjoy a comedy show. A lot of clubs host stand-up specials with famous and yet unknown comedians with the prices varying from free to several hundreds of pounds. Choose one that fits your taste and budget and simply go out to have a great laugh. Where else will you get as closely acquainted with the famous British humor?
Check out the cheapest pub you can find. Sure the floor and the tables may be a bit sticky, some of the lightbulbs tinkering, and the standards of customer service far from perfection but that’s not why you are here. You came for the classic atmosphere and – wait for it – good food. Yes, the best food is usually served in the cheapest of pubs. It is greasy, overfired, and filled to the brim with spices but that’s what makes it so darn good! Treat yourself to an unhealthy meal every once in a while and your taste buds will only thank you for it.
Once you are full, please check out a pub theater. Most of the plays in these places are rather edgy and even controversial, but that’s a good thing, right? We are looking to have a good time ta the pub of all places thus what would be a more fitting entertainment? Opera?
Check out the movies at the Prince Charles Cinema! This play shows new flicks as well as the good old classics and, more often than not, in marathons that will keep you entertained up until the morning. The cinema also hosts numerous events that only add more flair to an already outstanding experience. Long story short, the Prince Charles cinema is a must-visit spot for every moviegoer out there!
Forget about the transport and take a lovely stroll down the streets of London at night. This may not sound like a surprise that The Smoke at Day and the Smoke at Night are two different cities, but the reality of how different the two only strikes you upon experiencing the shift for yourself. Everything from the architecture to the street art on it becomes more appealing, alluring even. Some streets may even give you the goosebumps but – trust me on this one – the experience is totally worth it!
What are your favorite things to do on a night out in London? Please, share your ideas, beloved venues, and peculiar spots with the rest of the community, as I am sure that your insights will help many new expats to feel at home by learning more about the city!
And don’t forget to contact us in case you have any questions about London, the life here or the process of relocation to this gem in the crown of Great Britain!
