IT Tech Relocation

Last updated: September 2026 | Written by Corrina Pinsent at London Relocation.
Relocating technology professionals to London involves much more than getting someone from one country or city to another. Employees need to understand where to live, how their commute will work, what the London rental market requires and how quickly they need to make decisions. International hires may also need to coordinate their move with the UK visa process, while employers relocating several people at once need a consistent plan for arrivals, temporary accommodation and home searches.
London Relocation supports the people side of IT and technology relocation, helping technology professionals, executives and teams find homes and settle into London.
We relocate people, not IT equipment. We do not move servers, computers, data centres or other IT infrastructure. If you are moving technology equipment rather than staff, you need a specialist IT or office-removals provider.

FAQ
Who Is IT Relocation in London For?
Our IT relocation services in London are built for technology businesses and professionals moving to or within the capital. We support:
- Technology companies relocating individual employees
- Employers transferring software engineers and developers
- Cybersecurity, data and AI specialists moving to London
- Product managers and technical leaders
- Senior technology executives relocating with their families
- International companies establishing or expanding a London team
- Startups bringing key employees to the UK
- HR and global mobility teams coordinating multiple moves
- Individual technology professionals relocating for a new role
Every relocation is different. A software engineer moving alone may prioritise a short commute and a good home-working setup. A senior executive relocating with a family may need more space, access to schools and a completely different part of London.
The role triggers the relocation. The home, commute and day-to-day setup determine how smoothly it actually works.
Visa Routes for Technology Roles
Technology professionals moving internationally may need permission to work in the UK. The right immigration route depends on the individual, the role and the employer. Two routes are commonly relevant to technology specialists.
Skilled Worker visa
The Skilled Worker route is commonly used when a UK employer recruits or transfers an eligible employee. The employee generally needs a confirmed job with a Home Office-approved employer, a Certificate of Sponsorship, an eligible occupation, and to meet the applicable salary requirements.
For employers, this means immigration planning has to happen alongside relocation planning. The company may need to:
- Hold the appropriate sponsor licence
- Confirm the position is suitable for sponsorship
- Assign the employee a Certificate of Sponsorship
- Complete the necessary right-to-work and compliance processes
- Coordinate the immigration timeline with the employee’s intended start date
Sponsors also have ongoing record-keeping and monitoring responsibilities.
Once an application has been submitted with the required identity and supporting documentation, GOV.UK currently states that Skilled Worker decisions are usually made within around three weeks for applications made outside the UK, and eight weeks for applications made inside the UK. Individual cases can take longer.
Global Talent visa for digital technology
The Global Talent route may suit established or emerging leaders in digital technology, including people working in software development, engineering, data, AI, cybersecurity and digital products.
Unlike the Skilled Worker route, a job offer is not required. Applicants normally need to show they are a recognised leader or potential leader in digital technology, and usually need endorsement before applying, unless they qualify through an eligible prestigious prize.
London Relocation does not provide immigration or legal advice. Employers and employees should confirm current requirements with GOV.UK or a qualified immigration adviser before making decisions.
Where Do Technology Workers Live in London?
There is no single best neighbourhood for someone working in technology. The right area depends on three things first:
- Where the employee will work
- How often they need to commute
- What they want from their home and neighbourhood
London’s technology employers are spread across several parts of the city, so we start with the office location and transport connections rather than a postcode.
Old Street, Shoreditch and the City
Employees working around Old Street, Shoreditch, Liverpool Street and the City can look across East and North London for direct Underground, Overground or rail connections. Some people want to live close to the restaurants, nightlife and coworking spaces of Shoreditch. Others prefer a more residential neighbourhood with a straightforward commute.
King’s Cross and North London
King’s Cross is one of London’s best-connected transport hubs and opens up a wide range of residential areas across North London. For employees working around King’s Cross or central London, the best option is often several stops away rather than immediately next to the office.
Canary Wharf and the Elizabeth line
Technology professionals working in Canary Wharf, the Docklands or offices connected to the Elizabeth line often find that following the transport corridor opens up a much wider range of housing. A direct commute usually beats living geographically close to work.
West and South London
Working in technology does not mean living in East London. West and South London can work extremely well depending on office location, airport requirements, family needs and lifestyle.
Someone who travels internationally may value access to Heathrow. Someone moving with children may prioritise space, parks and schools. A hybrid worker may prefer a larger home further from the office.
Hybrid Working Changes the Home Search
Hybrid working has made the home itself a bigger part of relocation planning. An employee working remotely several days a week may need:
- Space for a proper desk
- A separate home office
- Reliable broadband
- Enough room for two people to work from home
- A quieter residential environment
- Coworking facilities nearby
Commuting less often also widens the property search. Someone travelling to the office twice a week may happily add 15 minutes to the journey in exchange for another bedroom, more green space or a neighbourhood they prefer.
That is why we look at working pattern, commute, budget and lifestyle together rather than one at a time.
Relocating a Technology Team to London
Moving one employee is different from relocating ten, twenty or more. A team relocation needs enough structure to stay manageable for HR while letting individual employees make different housing choices.
A coordinated relocation programme can include:
- Individual relocation briefs
- Phased arrival planning
- Temporary accommodation
- Home-search support
- Rental budget guidance
- Commute and neighbourhood planning
- Remote property searches
- Family requirements and school considerations
- Accompanied property viewings
- Rental process support
- Settling-in assistance
- A single point of contact for HR or global mobility
Employees working in the same office do not need to live in the same neighbourhood. One person may want a central one-bedroom flat. Another may be relocating with a partner, children and pets. The employer keeps the process consistent without forcing everyone into the same solution.

How a Tech Employee Relocation Works
- Establish the relocation brief. We start with the employee’s office location, start date, rental budget, household requirements and working pattern, then cover practical priorities such as schools, pets, home working, transport and lifestyle.
- Identify suitable areas. Rather than searching the whole of London, we use commute routes, budget and personal requirements to build a realistic shortlist of neighbourhoods.
- Prepare for the London rental market. International employees are often unfamiliar with UK referencing, tenancy requirements and the pace of the market. Getting documentation and expectations ready before viewings begin prevents delays later.
- Search and shortlist properties. We identify homes that match the agreed brief rather than sending dozens of unsuitable listings. Where needed, searches and viewings can be handled while the employee is still overseas.
- Secure the property. Once the right home is found, we support the employee through the offer, referencing and rental process.
- Get settled. The relocation does not end when the tenancy is signed. Depending on the service, support continues with practical settling-in tasks so the employee can focus on the job.
If the employee cannot travel before their start date, our remote home search handles viewings on their behalf. If they can visit for a day, an accompanied home search covers up to 20 properties in one day.
Why Employers Use Relocation Support
For HR and global mobility teams, a poorly planned move creates work. Employees spend their first weeks contacting agents, comparing unfamiliar neighbourhoods and trying to understand the rental process while starting a demanding new role.
For the employer, structured relocation support means:
- Less internal time spent on property searches
- More consistent support across employees
- A clearer employee experience
- Better coordination of multiple arrivals
- One London-based relocation contact
For the employee, it means someone on the ground who knows the city and can turn hundreds of possible neighbourhoods into a manageable plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About IT Relocation in London
What does IT relocation mean?
IT relocation can mean either moving technology infrastructure or relocating employees who work in technology. London Relocation handles the second: professionals, executives and teams moving to London. We do not move servers, computers, data centres or office IT infrastructure.
What visa does a software engineer need to work in the UK?
There is no single visa for all software engineers. Depending on the role and the individual, routes may include the Skilled Worker visa or, for eligible leaders and potential leaders in digital technology, the Global Talent visa. Skilled Worker applicants generally need sponsorship from an approved employer. Global Talent does not require a job offer. Rules change, so confirm current requirements with GOV.UK or an immigration professional.
How long does it take to relocate a technology team to London?
It depends on the number of employees, their arrival dates, immigration requirements, temporary accommodation needs and the type of homes they need. For larger teams, phased arrivals are usually easier to manage than moving everyone at once. Planning should start well before the first arrivals.
Can you relocate several technology employees at once?
Yes. A corporate relocation programme coordinates multiple employees while keeping individual home searches tailored to each person’s budget, household and commute.
Can you find a London home for an employee who is still overseas?
Yes. A remote home search is useful when an employee cannot travel before their start date. We shortlist and view properties on their behalf before they arrive.
Where should technology professionals live in London?
There is no single technology neighbourhood that suits everyone. The best area depends on office location, transport connections, working pattern, housing budget, household requirements and lifestyle.
