Americans moving to London can’t help but have a preconceived notion that it’s always the rainy season in all of England.  As your relocation agents will inform you this is nothing more than an American stereotype.  The climate can be compared to that of the mid-United States, and unlike it’s portrayed in many films (made by foreigners) it’s not always dark and rainy, which if you have already finished your relocation to London your well aware of.

This is not to say that one should not be prepared.  For Americans moving you may want some particulars as to what to do to prepare yourself for the eventual rain while you’re living here.

There is only one thing that you need to remember when you are moving to London, and rest assured that it may become the single most important item in your wardrobe and home. Once you start commuting about London you’ll notice that most people do carry an umbrella.  Now you don’t want a monster size golf umbrella to escort you everywhere you go. While it may do a fabulous job of keeping you personally dry, your fellow riders on the Tube won’t appreciate it much, and you’ll end finding it too cumbersome to try and carry.  As Americans moving to London you’ll soon realize you do far more walking in London than you ever did back home and traveling light is the key.

One should be aware that an umbrella  is most often referred to as a “brolly”.  So considering you’ll need to access your oyster card, be carrying whatever items you’ve needed for the day, you’ve needed for the day, your keys to the great place that the London relocation services company put you into, and if you’re a lady your purse, you want to get an umbrella that is light to carry and preferably one with a Velcro closure instead of a snap.  You don’t want to stand out as the Yank on the bus who’s losing the battle with his umbrella snap.

While not as important in the summer months as you’ll find it to be in the winter, it’s a good idea to invest in some slip over rubber shoe covers or galoshes type of footwear.  Considering the infrastructure was laid out for the city hundreds of years ago, water collecting in walkways is a common occurrence.

So fall in line with your new kindred folk of the UK  after your relocation and be prepared as a boy scout for the short summer showers that can come on out of no place, and tend to disappear just as fast.
