If it has been a lifelong dream to start your relocation to London, there are a couple of aspects that you need to know about an international relocation before you start. The days of globetrotting and relocation to London on a whim are long gone. There are millions of people around the world who consider moving to London every year and if the UK had to let everyone in, there would be a crisis.

It may feel like the UK is deliberately trying to keep foreigners out of the country when you’re making your way through the visa application for relocation to London. In effect, it is! The government does not want to take jobs away from British citizens so the process of being granted a visa has been designed to restrict the amount of people by way of eligibility.

It’s not just the UK that has a strict admissions process; it’s more difficult for foreigners to enter the US these days. Your relocation may actually be easier than you think.

The Basics

All US citizens can enter the UK with a valid US passport and stay for up to six months. If you want to extend your visit, or get a job then you will have to apply for the correct visa. The most common way that people enter the country is by being transferred to the city of London as part of a relocation jobs package. This will mean that you are sponsored by a US company with offices here. You may also apply for jobs through a UK company, who will then sponsor your visa application for an international relocation.

If a company is sponsoring you, you may be able to negotiate the services of a relocation services company to help make your move easier. A lot of the red-tape will be handled in-house and you can be living in the vibrant city before you know it.

Remember this before you start: It is illegal to come to the UK for the purposes of looking for a job. Job seeking on a tourist visa will have you red flagged very quickly. If you’re set on relocation to the UK then you’ll have to start working it from your side of the world!
