Your London relocation services company will probably tell you that you do not need a car. This is the best bit of advice you may ever get when moving here. Owning a car in London can be a nightmare of epic proportions. You’ll have to pay for driving the car within the city limits, every day, and you’ll be forced to pay for parking wherever you park. That is, if you can find somewhere to park it!

Using the public transport system is going to take a bit of time, but it truly is the most effective way of getting around the city. The way that that London has been established means that each neighborhood has a small collection of shops and services, known as the ‘high street’.  You’ll find soon after your relocation that your neighborhood will have some grocery stores, banks, pubs, and restaurants. If you want to rent a car for longer trips around England or you feel that you absolutely have to have your own vehicle then you need to learn about driving in England.

·      They drive on the wrong side of the road. Now that you are moving here you’ll have to get used to the fact that it’s YOU who drives on the wrong side of the road! The British drive on the left hand side of the road, which can take a while to get used to and is not something you want to try in rush hour traffic while driving a stick shift for the first time.

·      Nearly all vehicles on the road use a stick shift transmission. When you take your British test you’ll have to qualify on a standard transmission to get a full licence.

·      Your US license is only valid for a year after your relocation, so you will have to get a British Licence (that’s the correct spelling in the UK!) to be legal on the roads.

There are other conditions attached to driving in England that you will have to sort out when you arrive. Taxes, insurance and registration of your vehicle must be [paid before you start driving. If you need any help with organizing a rental car or buying a car then ask your London relocation agents to point you in the right direction.
