Are you used to driving your own car? After your relocation you should try and get by without one for at least four months. You do not have to own a car to love and work in the city after your relocation to London. Be sure to tell your London relocation agents where you will be working so they can find you an apartment close to transport routes for your commute. Giving up the freedom of having your own wheels is one of the most frustrating aspects of life in the city, especially for Americans moving to London.

If you MUST own a Car

There is no doubt that owning a car is useful, but you’ll have to be prepared to absorb the cost into your monthly budget.

·      You will have to apply for a British driver’s license as soon as possible. This will involve both a written test and a practical driving examination. Even if you know how to drive, you’ll want to take a couple of lessons before your test, to get used to driving on the other side of the road, and the use of a manual gearbox.

·      Your car will have to be registered in the city of London and you will have to pay an annual Road Tax. If your car is over two years old you will also have to have a certificate of roadworthiness every year. This is called a MOT, and has to be displayed at all times. Depending on where you live in London, you may have to pay a monthly residential parking fee.

·      If you drive your car into the city, you can expect to pay a hefty parking charge no matter where you park, and you have to pay the daily congestion charge which is over £8 per day. This has been implemented in an attempt to reduce congestion and traffic in the city.

·      After you have paid all of that you still have to gas up to get your car moving!

There are more cost effective ways of obtaining a car for day trips and vacations. After your relocation you don’t want to get stuck in the city forever. Look into a car club, which allows you use of a car when you need it, or, for longer trips after your international relocation, consider renting a small vehicle.
