As soon as you touch down after your relocation to London, you’re no longer a tourist. When your London relocation agents give you the lease to sign on your new home; you’re no longer just a visitor. When you’ve rolled your eyes in disgust at the delay caused by someone jumping in front of a train on the way to work; you’re a real local!

The transition from tourist to Londoner can take a bit of time, and while no one is suggesting that you dismiss your cultural history, you will need to be open to new ideas and traditions that you will discover after your relocation.

Casual Tourist to Citizen:

  • Try not to pull focus onto the fact that you’re a foreigner in a negative way. Nothing will endear you less to your new colleagues and friends if you continually make comparisons between life in the UK and your life back at home. Telling people that you do it differently in your country is considered rude.
  • Good manners will help you in every aspect of your life. Although many Americans moving are appalled by the lack of customer service, you will find that locals appreciate good manners and will notice that you’re trying to fit in rather than stand out. It’s little things that make a huge difference after moving here. Just saying please and thank you can make a huge difference in your day. If you bump into someone, apologize. The British people are remarkably cognizant of manners, and their natural restraint, may make them seem a bit stand-offish at first.
  • If you’re just starting your relocation jobs package then there will be some differences in the workplace. If you’ve just arrived, rather ask questions and listen before giving your opinions. If you get your colleagues on your side, they will go out of their way to explain things to you. A helping hand and friendly face is always great if you’re trying to fit in at a new job in a new city.

You don’t have to change who you are to fit in after your relocation. This city has a way of becoming part of your very fabric and soul. In six months, you’ll be right at home, and wondering how you can extend your stay.
