Many suffer from homesick after moving to London from America, especially for the wild, open spaces that cover so much of the American countryside.  London, like any large city, can be overwhelming to newcomers not used to living in one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas.  For those moving from America who have a strong need to reconnect with nature there is a quiet retreat nestled deep within London’s boundaries – Mudchute Park and Farms.

This thirty-two acre farm and park is a planned farm and was created in the late 1970s when the city wanted to use a previously undeveloped area of land to build a high-rise apartment building.  The citizens around the land which came into existence after dredging Millwall Dock wanted to preserve it and so the Mudchute Association was created.  With corporate and private support the association was able to stop development of the high-rise and created the farm to educate the public.  The objectives of Mudchute are education of countryside activities for all ages, recreation, and protection of animals. Since it opened over thirty years school children from around the city  have enjoyed the farm animals and learned how to protect wildlife.

Families moving from America can visit Mudchute as well.  There is no admission fee and the park is open year round.  Different parts of the farm have different hours of operation so it’s advised that guests check times before planning a visit.  There are farm animals to visit, traditional British food to eat in the kitchen restaurant, fields to walk and a state-of-the-art equestrian center to visit.  The stables offer lessons to all levels of riders.

Volunteers are needed to help in all areas of the farm.  This could be a great opportunity to get active in a new community after moving from America especially for those from parts of the States with abundant farmland with skills to share with Londoners.  Whether just looking for a way to spend a Saturday afternoon or wanting to learn more about traditional British country activities any family moving to London from America will enjoy a visit to Mudchute Park and Farm.
